BVIM Co-founder,
Mercy Smith

In June of 1974, Mercy Smith and Dorothy Chin, (with help from Rose Gottmer from Guide Dogs for the Blind, Sister Margaret from Catholic Social Services, and Talking Books) used a list of Talking Book recipients as a calling list, and invited all on the list to a support group for low-vision Marin residents. This was the first meeting of BVIM. It was held at the newly opened Martinelli House in San Rafael.

Early BVIM volunteers and members were: Dick and Berta Dressling, Virginia and Charlie Dziomba, Revis White, Rose Schaeffer, Bob Smith and Gloria Dittero. In 1978 Mercy moved from San Rafael to Sonoma where she created a low vision support group at Vintage House.

We are saddened by the loss of Mercy who passed away in February.
